Located in Conyers Farm, an area in Greenwich that borders a small hamlet of Armonk in Westchester, NY, the retreat has served as the Howard family home for nearly 20 years, during which time they shaped the scenic property into their own private oasis.
“We moved 3,000 miles away from the hub of Los Angeles to raise our family here,” Howard said in a press release. “Whether we’re watching films in our theater, walking the trails throughout our property, stargazing in our observatory, or just relaxing with friends and loved ones by the lake, Cheryl and I feel we’ve accomplished the goals we set when we began work on this place.”
Anchoring the celebrity’s grounds is a classic New England estate that spans 17,200 square feet, with five bedrooms, six full bathrooms and four half bathrooms. In addition to the Howards’ private screening room, the home features a handsome two-story library and office, an indoor saltwater pool, a gym with a yoga studio and six fireplaces.
Outside the relaxed grounds offer a range of entertainment. A “sports barn” comes with a regulation tennis court and basketball half-court, and the observatory comes equipped with a professional grade Meade telescope. For the outdoorsman, various nature trails, perennial gardens, a greenhouse and raised gardens can be found throughout.
“The Howards’ property is truly in a class of its own and is located in Conyers Farm, one of the country’s most prestigious communities. The 32-acre compound enjoys breathtaking, panoramic views of Converse Lake and has a warm, welcoming vibe that is felt from the moment you drive onto the property,” said Lyn Stevens of Sotheby’s International Realty.
As for why Howard would want to leave such an idyllic setting, the Academy Award-winning director, who owns various luxury homes around the world, had this to say: “Our children are grown, so it’s time to move on, but the memories of this very special place will never leave us.”
Howard, 60, got his start in show business at an early age, playing the part of Opie Taylor in the TV sitcom “The Andy Griffith Show.” He later played the teenaged Richie Cunningham on the “Happy Days” TV show. As a director, he is best known for the films “Cocoon,” “Apollo 13” and “A Beautiful Mind,” the latter of which earned him an Academy Award for best director.
Sotheby’s International Realty–Greenwich Brokerage independent sales associate Lyn Stevens and her team have been selected to co-market the Howard estate along with Tamar Lurie, a top producing sales associate affiliated with Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in Connecticut and Westchester, N.Y.
